Appalling is a good word for it, that’s for sure! I’m very curious how much of this expectation and sentiment is common. How much of it underpins the perspectives we see in polls and studies, or the fact that major reforms aren’t happening? It is definitely a tactic of suppression. I felt the need to address it. As I was researching, I was shocked by how many times the word “grateful” showed up. No surprise, I have had a conversation with a white supremacist who said the same thing. Even the idea that white people need to be in charge for world order and the good of everyone feels like a nod to gratitude.
