The House of Representatives has impeached Donald J. Trump twice. And Rep. Cori Bush said what needed to be said the first time the House impeached Trump:
“Madam Speaker, St. Louis and I rise in support of the article of impeachment against Donald J. Trump. If we fail to remove a white-supremacist president who incited a white-supremacist insurrection, it’s communities like Missouri’s 1st District that suffer the most.
The 117th Congress must understand that we have a mandate to legislate in defense of Black lives. The first step in that process is to root out white supremacy, starting with impeaching the white supremacist-in-chief. Thank you, and I yield back.”
That’s what I needed to hear because I didn’t get that the first time the House impeached Trump. That’s why in 2019, I said, “The Colorblind Impeachment of Donald J. Trump Is Pathetic.”
It’s ineffective to impeach a white demagogue by colorblindness because colorblindness further entrenches whiteness.
Trump’s whiteface and Trump’s white demagoguery were enough to impeach him — every day. Instead, the white Democratic leadership in Congress did nothing as white terrorists postmarked pipe bombs and committed hate crimes in Trump’s name and because of his words.
Remember when Pelosi said Trump wasn’t worth impeachment? Remember when pundits said Mike Pence — the same Mike Pence the white terrorists just tried to hang — was a bigger threat than Trump?
Before Trump’s first impeachment, the white Democratic leadership in the House claimed they needed a white reason to impeach Trump — so whites would accept the charges.
Here Trump was running around the country inciting hate crimes, and Congress wanted to talk about obstruction of justice. If the House needed a white reason to impeach Trump, they should’ve impeached Trump for his white demagoguery, because white demagoguery is the whitest reason of all.
That’s why in 2019, I wrote the piece, “Dear Congress, White Supremacy Is Trump’s High Crime.”
“It’s petty to continue investigations about obstruction of justice, campaign finance, and emoluments when the president is inspiring white supremacists to murder people. How can you see your name on a kill list cosigned by Donald Trump and think tax returns are vital in this moment?
How can anyone stand up and say, ‘We’re starting impeachment for obstruction of justice,’ when Trump’s racist words are the nuclear codes of mass destruction?”
Today, people are saying a lot about the Capitol Police. And people are saying a lot about accomplices in the GOP. But the white Democratic leadership in the House has plenty of blame, too. Congress is the checkpoint that failed first. If Congress has oversight, if Congress is a check on the presidency, Congress failed too.
And this failure by Congress wasn’t on the GOP side. On the GOP side, this attack on the Capitol was “mission accomplished” and “promises made, promises kept.” It’s the white Democratic leadership in the House that reaped what they allowed Trump to sow.
It’s important to recognize that this attack on the Capitol didn’t start on January 6. The white mob terrorized, immobilized, and had the white Democratic leadership in the House stuck in rooms doing nothing about Trump before January 6.
Now Nancy is in a hurry. But does she understand why?
The recent attack on the Capitol is what happens when white leadership makes hostages out of democracy and justice. The recent attack on the Capitol is what happens when whites force democracy and justice to wait for them.
But then, The Honorable Cori Bush took the floor. The congresswoman from Missouri’s first congressional district did not offer a Missouri compromise in her first speech. In her first speech on the floor, Congresswoman Bush said what needed to be said.
Now, who will investigate and hold the white Democratic leadership in the House accountable for not saying what they needed to say, and not doing what they needed to do, before January 6?
