My Come-to-Jesus Moment with Gay White Atheists & Activists

Have you ever read a rant online and said to yourself, “WTF!?”

Have your eyes ever popped as you scrolled and said, “Why are they writing this?” And, although the person behind the keyboard explains, it still doesn’t compute.

Well, that may happen to you in this post too, haha. Because it happened to me on February 21, 2018. When Billy Graham died, it was breaking news, and it stopped my day. I wrote a post the same day about his death and evangelicals.

And while I still maintain Billy Graham did great things, people came for him hard.

One gay blogger mentions his own membership in a den of people who wait to “dishonor the dead.” His gaggle of gays giggle over special GIFs that read — ‘ good riddance.’

So, within seconds of Billy Graham’s death, people went to work on their nastygrams. There was a piece in Rolling Stone, there was a piece in The Guardian, and there was one in The Independent. The pieces were all over the place.

And, I get it, people collect clicks by giving the finger to people in caskets. But these ‘remember when' writings are disrespectful and insensitive. Death gets people, there’s no need to kick them for clicks. So, the Fred Phelps style protests of Billy Graham shocked me. One media professional sent me to my prayer closet.

Here is one of his tweets:

With every tweet, my mind raced with thoughts like:

“Why does this feel like a cut-and-paste job from other social issues?”

As you can see, I’m a Black gay man and this media personality is not. So, I looked at our differences to understand our difference of opinion.

“Is this because he’s a white gay man?”
