Hi, Allene. There’s no question that anti-bias training can be effective. There are numerous studies to back that up. One study I like comes out of the University of Wisconsin with Patricia Devine. I think it’s the University of Wisconsin…She talks about prejudice as a habit that requires self management. There’s another study called Addicted to Hate which is insightful. There’s another study about Imagined Contact with someone who’s different. My problem with it all is twofold. One, it requires constant attention and work. Two, it’s used to justify and excuse racism. To me, implicit/unconscious bias is still racism. A writer for the Guardian wrote that if the knee keeps kicking it wants to kick. It’s on purpose. That’s a paraphrase, but I take that point. I believe policies are most important. What do you think?
