Hi, Linda. Great point about men. I had included men in this originally. Certainly, there are other applications. Also originally, this post was entitled, “Why ‘not all white people' isn’t for white people at all: to say or receive.” But I made a change. I wanted to show different contexts for using the phrase. I’m thinking more like, “hey, not all white people will listen to your racist jokes” said to a white person by a white person. That’s like me saying, “hey, not all men have to be xyz,” to another man. Using it to interfere is what I’m thinking. Not as a defense. Not ever to minimize someone who is lamenting an outcome or wrongs. Context is important. Intent is important. Group membership is important. In the face of injustice or a bad outcome, “too many white people” or “too many men” is the response. Thanks for your comments.
