Hi, Michael. By substitution test, I was referring to the test people use to determine if some statement is racist. There are some organizations that will substitute Black for white in statements about white people to determine if the statement is racist. I didn’t mean exactly that people shouldn’t think of their experiences while reading my words. Thanks for asking. As a gay man, I also have these assumptions about groups of straight men, churchgoers, in general, to include older, Black people. More specifically to groups of Black people, if I am uncomfortable, it is usually related to the size of the group because for me, as an introvert, I always prefer small groups. Then, besides the size of the group, if I am uncomfortable, it may be from a lack of commonalities with most of the group which could include a number of differences. So, there’s always a possibility of being uncomfortable and making assumptions. That’s the heart of this piece with groups of white people as the example. Originally, I mentioned other scenarios in the piece but I decided to focus. The self-talk strategy will apply for me across the board. Thanks for reading and for your response.
