In this piece, when I write about white defiance sometimes it refers to racists in the North; sometimes it refers to racists in the South; sometimes it refers to Democrats, and sometimes Republicans. The same applies to white complicity. When I write about compromise, I’m talking about the ones from the beginning on down. When I write about the war, I’m writing about what I describe as a war over which side of white supremacy wins. I did not mention Grant. But with Grant, I grant that he was strong in a number of ways. However, there’s evidence that troop withdrawals and compromises happened during his administration too. Thanks for reading!
