All the words and terms we use are stuck and suck. I’d use them for justice, but watch how racism masquerades as “race.” Normalizing “race” is part of the problem. We have to keep it, but call it out for what it is. One part of Racecraft that stays with me is how the term “racial” justice is technically an oxymoron. Race is a lie, and it is its own injustice. Other words and terms are redundant. If we claim now that race is just about skin color or ancestry, then that is sort of a pre-race world with the racist terms. It’s important to know the truth and to speak the truth, but the truth is never enough. These are political identities. They are evidence, and so we must hold on to them to get justice. I think at some point the terms should undergo a revision. Some groups have done so. But people who identify as white have not for the most part. Justice and ending inequalities are most important. The truth and evidence are necessary too. The lack of words, and the inaccurate words, expose the struggle and injustice. But even if we don’t have the right words, we need to take the right actions. Support for reparations would lead this country to reckon with itself and possibly lead it look at policies and even the constitution.
