I appreciate this reflection. I’ve been thinking a lot about my senior yearbook from high school. In the yearbook, every senior has a bio/will. Under my dislikes, I wrote three: “rudeness, snobs, and racism.” I recently got a copy of the yearbook and I was shocked to see racism listed. Well, I did appreciate the consistency over my life…But to your point, I’ve been wondering how I defined and understood racism at 18. I’m 41 now. I’m still thinking about that. There’s so much to racism. And now, I have a deep appreciation for my parents who looked at me when I was a child and they already knew what I would have to learn. Oh, it was a lot easier and more optimistic for me at 18.
