I think this is key. The words had specific definitions and applications. The still do. The whole freedom from vs. freedom to. Whiteness always had invisible words there. We have had to read between the lines. Not enough people recognize how those words are loaded and coded. Even if we look at those words as written by white men for white men in a white man’s country, those words are lies. White people have always been hell to each other! I appreciate and respect how Black people and marginalized people have turned those words around and forced change. We know that change in America has only come through us. But the change has never been for the right reasons and in full. I don’t think using white America’s expressed ideals and values to change America is effective anymore. I’m in the burn it down and make a new constitution group. But that’s me! Great piece.
