I wholly agree. Awareness is the first step. There’s a book out, research paper, and YouTube video by sociologist Patricia Devine called Kicking the Prejudice Habit. She outlines steps to managing and breaking prejudice which she sees as a habit. The first step is awareness and there are many ways to obtain that awareness. What I’ve also found through research is that former hate group members describe their hate as an addiction which is very interesting if we think of prejudice as a habit. There’s a research paper online called Addicted to Hate that describes that. Some have also compared white supremacy to a drug for the brain. Our bad habits and addictions can harm others. The academic world has many resources. We need to talk about this more and elevate the resources.
