And What It Taught Me About Bad Brands, Bad Celebrities, and Bad Politicians

Some time ago, my boyfriend and I moved into his childhood home. His mom passed away a year ago so now we live in the house alone.

We decided to keep most of the cookware his mom had in the house.

One piece of cookware has a famous name on the back.

It’s a pan by Paula Deen.

It’s been here in the house for months. And, recently I used it for the first time.

I struggled to light a fire under the Paula Deen pan. She represents racism to me.

Do you remember when she was under fire in 2013? Overnight, stores and networks dropped her and her products. Paula was a pariah. Paula Deen then went on morning shows and released a video filled with tears.

Well, I never forgave her. And, with Paula Deen’s admitted use of the n-word, I issued her a lifetime ban.

A few years ago, I went to Savannah, GA, and I rolled my eyes at all things Paula Deen.

Racism is criminal to me. That’s just the law of my mind. I can’t trust a person to change without personally knowing them.

So, this Paula Deen pan in my house troubled me. For months, I refused to use it. I usually just grab one of the other…
