This reminds me of Toni Morrison saying to Charlie Rose that white people have a very, very serious problem [with racism.] She says, “take me out of it.” I share that to say this is a white problem. Lindsey Graham is a white problem. Race is a way to organize people. Race is a way to group people for exploitation and to distribute resources. It is a tool of colonization. If one does not like that grouping that means justice is required. Whites have been colonized too. Whiteness is a form of bondage. An imposed identity. A state-issued ID. You cannot escape it. It is not about you. The state has to change and that’s where efforts should focus and remain. So yes, by design you are shackled to Graham in some ways. This is your middle passage in the boat. Freedom from whiteness is necessary. You can’t point to him like he’s Southern whiteness and you’re Northern whiteness. You cannot divorce from Graham without justice, without a court order. Race is a political identity. It is a category and not a description. There are Brown people who can by law check the white box. It’s a terrible condition, this whiteness. The best one can do is to toil and labor in the fields for freedom which can only come by state power.
