Yes, this is part of the notion that today’s white people shouldn’t have to do more to remedy the actions of yesterday’s white people. It is a refusal of accountability past and present. It is a tactic of white supremacy that is revisionist. We see it in polls too as white people say things are great and Black people are asking for too much. That thinking is one thought that is standing in the way, and politicians use it to deregulate oversight of discrimination and to suppress protests. In the piece, I mentioned how Pat Buchanan used the word “grievances.” But Nancy Pelosi used the word recently too in a response to a question about the Movement for Black Lives. I don’t know why but something about that word doesn’t sit well with me. I can’t explain it yet. But now you got me thinking about it!
