Yes, yes, you’re right. The term “white reconstruction” comes to mind. And also from my reading of the book Rising Out of Hatred, white-supremacist groups have been working to further mainstream themselves for some time. What I don’t want people to miss is that — this is how white identity functions. What you see and describe with Trump and white supremacists is how white identity functions for all whites. White identity is an alliance between the ruling class and people in the middle and below. That’s what Trump has too. White identity hasn’t always existed and at one point it was a fringe concept. White identity itself is a form of radicalization; it is an identity that hates humanity by its definition and construction. That white identity has been mainstreamed on purpose. White identity makes all of what you see with Trump and white-supremacist groups possible. White identity itself is the problem.
